Most network engineer interview questions guides give you one list: OSI model, TCP versus UDP, what is a VLAN. That list is not wrong. It is just answering a question you may not have been asked.
The title “network engineer” now covers three different jobs with three different interviews. One of them has no coding round at all. One expects you to write a Python script live. Preparing for the wrong one is the single most expensive mistake in this role, and almost no guide organises around it.

This guide sorts the role into those three tiers, then gives you the real network engineer interview questions candidates reported inside each — dated, attributed, and separated by tier so you can prepare for the loop you are actually in.
The Questions Everyone Publishes Are Over a Decade Old
Start with a check you can run yourself. Glassdoor’s generic network engineer page holds roughly 3,991 interview reports. The questions surfaced on its front page are dated 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2019.
They are real questions. They are also, in several cases, older than a CCNA revision cycle:

That last one is quoted exactly as the candidate typed it, typo included. It is also a near-perfect summary of what most 2026 guides still publish as their question list.
To be fair to the field, not every guide is stuck there. One recruiter guide I checked, from KORE1, does cover Python live-coding, Ansible playbooks, Netmiko and NAPALM, and organises its advice by seniority from junior to principal. It is a genuinely useful page.
But seniority is the wrong axis. The evidence below shows a junior network engineer at Meta facing algorithm rounds while a senior network engineer at Cisco reportedly faces BGP troubleshooting and no coding at all. What decides your interview is not how many years you have. It is which of the three jobs you applied to.
The Three Tiers of Network Engineer Interview Questions
Every reported loop behind these network engineer interview questions falls into one of three shapes. The dividing line is what the employer needs you to do on your first day.

The counterintuitive part is that tier does not track company prestige. Two of the largest employers in the world sit in different tiers for the same job title, which the reported questions below show directly.
Tier 1 — you operate the network
Enterprise, vendor, MSP and most in-house corporate roles. The interview is a conversation about protocols and a scenario about something broken. There is no editor, no algorithm, and often no whiteboard.
Tier 2 — you automate the network
Cloud providers and large-scale operators. Fundamentals still lead, but automation is tested as a named competency. You may be asked to write or read a script; you are not usually asked to invert a binary tree.
Tier 3 — you build the network software
Big-tech infrastructure orgs where the network is a software product. You get a standard software-engineering coding loop and a networking depth interview. Both must pass.
Real Network Engineer Interview Questions Candidates Reported
Every question below is quoted from a dated candidate report, grouped by the tier its loop belongs to. Where a candidate summarised rather than quoted, that is noted rather than dressed up as a quotation.
Tier 1 questions — protocol depth and troubleshooting
“Detailed configurations and BGP troubleshooting.” — Network Engineer, Cisco, New York, January 2026. Candidate accepted the offer and rated the interview difficult.
“How would you deal with a customer that was angry about something that didnt have to do with Microsoft but they thought it did.” — Network Engineer, Microsoft, Dallas, January 2026
“Given a very large existing network with thousands of external connections, how would you add an additional few hundred connections?” — Network Engineer, Microsoft, March 2012
“How do you handle irate clients that are having technical trobules and need to work immediately.” — Network Engineer / Systems Administrative, Univision, December 2011
Note what the two Microsoft reports have in common across fourteen years: neither mentions coding, and both are about judgement under pressure rather than recall. The January 2026 report describes a first call with a manager and two technical leads emphasising problem-solving approach over specific technical knowledge.
Cisco’s reported process across 87 interviews is a phone interview (20%), one-on-one (18%), a presentation (14%), a skills test (11%) and a group panel (8%), averaging 29 days. Coding does not appear in the reported breakdown.
Tier 2 questions — fundamentals plus automation
“Network fundamentals, network automation, network protocols” — Network Engineer, Amazon, Seattle, June 2026
That same June 2026 report describes a five-round loop: one gatekeeper round on network fundamentals, one leadership principles interview, and four loop rounds covering, in the candidate’s words, “amazon leadership principle and core networking and automation interviews.”
Automation is named as a tested competency. An algorithm round is not mentioned. A May 2026 internship report from Sydney describes a phone screen “Focused on competency and alot of questions regarding Amazon’s leadership principles.”
Tier 3 questions — real coding rounds at Google and Meta
This is where generic network engineer interview questions lists fail hardest, because these loops look like software engineering interviews wearing a networking badge.
“How arp packets work like in details” — Network Engineer, Meta, Seattle, December 2025. The same two-part interview included LeetCode-style coding: matching parentheses, and a Battleship problem with a follow-up. The candidate noted the networking portion was unexpectedly rigorous.
“Explain an enterprise network hierarchy throughout the OSI layers.” — Network Engineer, Meta, Menlo Park, March 2026. Format reported as two 90-minute assessments covering data structures and technical topics.
“Explain the steps of a device reaches Google.com using the OSI model” — Network Engineer, Google, Atlanta, September 2025. Reported as nine interviews total: five technical, four behavioural.
A January 2026 Google report from London describes one phone screen plus four rounds, three technical and one behavioural, with the technical content covering basic coding, arrays, sliding-window algorithms and graph problems. Google’s reported average is 27 days across 42 interviews, with difficulty rated difficult.
A January 2026 Meta report describes five interviews: one screening, one coding assessment, and three one-hour sessions in a single day, with questions on networking protocols and the TCP stack.
The verbal and behavioural questions, across every tier
Verbal network engineer interview questions decide more Tier 1 and Tier 2 loops than any protocol question, and they are the half most technical candidates under-prepare.

Amazon’s loop puts a full leadership principles interview in the middle of a five-round technical process, and every Amazon report quoted above names leadership principles explicitly. If you are interviewing there, that round is not a formality.
The Coding Round, Worked in Python
Tier 3 network engineer interview questions demand working code, not a description of an algorithm. Below are two problems reported by real candidates plus one network-flavoured problem, each solved the way you would in a live round.
Matching parentheses — reported at Meta, December 2025
A stack problem. The trick is to check the closing bracket against the top of the stack rather than counting.

Sliding window — reported at Google, January 2026
The London report named sliding-window algorithms directly. The pattern to rehearse is the fixed-size window that updates in constant time instead of recomputing.

Subnet membership — the network-flavoured coding question
Not quoted from a specific report, but the standard shape when a Tier 2 or Tier 3 loop wants code that is actually about networking. Python’s standard library does the hard part, and knowing that is the point.

What decides your interview is not how many years you have. It is which of the three jobs you applied to.
How to Tell Which Tier You Applied To
Read the job posting before you read another list of network engineer interview questions. The signals are reliable.
- Tier 1 signals: named vendor certifications (CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA), specific hardware families, “troubleshoot”, “escalation”, “on-call rotation”, shift patterns.
- Tier 2 signals: Python, Ansible, Terraform, Netmiko, NAPALM, “infrastructure as code”, “API”, “at scale”, cloud provider names.
- Tier 3 signals: “software engineer” anywhere in the title or ladder, data structures mentioned in requirements, a named programming language as a hard requirement, “distributed systems”, “we build our own”.
Then do the thing almost nobody does: ask your recruiter directly whether the loop contains a coding round, and if so whether it is algorithmic or scripting. Both Google and Meta reports describe multi-stage loops where that answer changes weeks of preparation. What I Could Not Establish
Several things about network engineer interview questions stayed out of reach. Naming the gaps is more useful than filling them.
Whether the tiers hold beyond the companies sampled. The network engineer interview questions above come from five employers plus the generic page. The three-tier split is drawn from reports at Cisco, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Meta. It is a pattern across those employers, not a law.
Amazon’s coding round, if any. No Amazon network engineer report I read mentions an algorithm round, but absence in three reports is not proof of absence in the loop. Automation is named; algorithms are simply not mentioned either way.
Cisco’s skills test content. Cisco’s reported breakdown includes a skills test in 11% of loops, but no report I found describes what that test contains.
Whether the old questions are still asked. The 2011–2016 questions on the generic page are certainly dated. That does not mean subnetting and STP stopped being asked — it means the public record surfacing them is old, and I could not date a recent report for those specific questions.
Practice Exercises That Match the Reported Format
These are practice exercises I constructed to match the reported format. They are not real network engineer interview questions, and none are drawn from candidate accounts. The dated, attributed questions are in the section above. Work these in the tier you are actually targeting.
- Tier 1 — the outage narration. A user reports a site is unreachable. Narrate your troubleshooting from the physical layer upward, out loud, in under five minutes, naming the command you would run at each step. Tier 1 loops score the narration, not the answer.
- Tier 1 — the angry-customer script. Write and rehearse a 90-second answer for a customer angry about something that is not your fault. Two of the Microsoft reports above are exactly this question.
- Tier 2 — the idempotent change. Write a Python script that applies a VLAN change to a list of switches and produces the same result if it runs twice. Then explain what breaks if it runs on 500 devices concurrently.
- Tier 2 — parse the config. Given a router configuration as text, extract every interface with its IP and description into structured data. Reading configs programmatically is the everyday Tier 2 skill.
- Tier 3 — the wrapped algorithm. Take any standard sliding-window or graph problem and restate it as a networking scenario before solving it. Rehearsing the translation is what the Google and Meta reports actually describe.
How to Prepare for Network Engineer Interview Questions
- Identify your tier before anything else. Everything below depends on it, and it takes one reading of the job posting.
- Tier 1: rehearse troubleshooting out loud. Protocol recall is table stakes; the reported questions are scenarios and judgement calls.
- Tier 2: be able to write a script under observation. Not elegant, working. Idempotency and error handling matter more than cleverness.
- Tier 3: run a real DSA cycle. Arrays, sliding window, stacks and graphs are all named in the reports above. Do not skip the networking depth round on the assumption the coding round is the hard one — the Meta candidate said the opposite.
- Prepare the behavioural answers separately. Conflict, motivation and customer-handling questions appear in every tier and every company sampled.
- Ask the recruiter what the loop contains. Given how far the tiers diverge, this is worth more than another hour of practice.

Network Engineer Interview Questions: FAQ
Do network engineer interviews have a coding round?+
It depends entirely on the employer. Reported Google and Meta network engineer loops include algorithm rounds — sliding window, graphs, matching parentheses. Reported Cisco, Microsoft and Amazon loops do not mention an algorithm round, though Amazon names network automation as a tested competency.
Do I need Python for a network engineer job?+
For Tier 2 and Tier 3, yes. For Tier 1 it is a differentiator rather than a gate. Amazon’s June 2026 report names automation directly, and recruiter guidance widely lists Python, Ansible and Terraform, but the Tier 1 reports above are protocol and troubleshooting conversations.
How long does a network engineer interview process take?+
Reported averages are 27 days at Google across 42 interviews and 29 days at Cisco across 87. Google’s difficulty is rated difficult; Cisco’s reports are mixed.
What networking depth is tested at big tech?+
Deeper than candidates expect. Reported questions include tracing a packet to Google.com through the OSI model, explaining ARP packet mechanics in detail, enterprise hierarchy across OSI layers, and the TCP stack. One Meta candidate described the networking portion as unexpectedly rigorous alongside the coding.
Is the network engineer role declining?+
For the closest tracked occupation, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of network and computer systems administrators to decline 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, with median pay of $99,130 per year as of May 2025. That occupation is not identical to network engineer, and the automation and big-tech tiers are not obviously covered by it — read it as context, not as your role’s forecast.
