For years, humanoid robots looked like technology that belonged in science-fiction movies: machines that could walk, talk, carry objects and potentially work alongside humans. In 2026, however, that idea is moving much closer to reality. The clearest evidence is coming from China's 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, where robotics companies are demonstrating machines designed not simply to entertain crowds, but to perform actual work. More than 300 companies and over 2,000 robotic exhibits are expected at this year's conference, which runs from August 19 to August 23. We've seen that before. What's different now is what companies are trying to make them do. At the World Robot Conference, robots have been demonstrated sorting parcels, packing mobile phones and performing household-related tasks. According to Reuters, the industry is increasingly trying to move humanoids from attention-grabbing demonstrations toward practical applications in manufacturing, logistics and services. China Is Becoming a Humanoid Robotics Powerhouse China has emerged as one of the most aggressive players in the humanoid robotics race. Reuters reported that Chinese companies accounted for 97% of worldwide humanoid robot shipments during the first half of 2026. At the same time, the technology hasn't completely reached mass commercial adoption: around 65% of those robots were still being used for non-commercial purposes. That contrast tells us something important about where the industry stands. The boom has started — but the revolution isn't finished. Companies can manufacture increasingly sophisticated humanoids, but making them reliable, affordable and useful enough to deploy everywhere remains the real challenge. Investors Are Betting Big on Robots The financial markets are also beginning to treat humanoid robotics as a major technology sector. Chinese robot maker Unitree made headlines after its shares surged dramatically during its Shanghai stock-market debut on August 19. Reuters reported that Unitree's stock jumped more than sixfold on its first trading day, highlighting extraordinary investor enthusiasm around robotics and embodied artificial intelligence. Investors appear to be asking whether humanoid robotics could become the next major technology platform after smartphones, cloud computing and generative AI. If robots eventually become common in factories, warehouses, shops, hospitals and homes, the potential market could be enormous. Robots Are Already Leaving the Laboratory Other companies are pushing rapidly toward commercial deployment. AiMOGA Robotics, the robotics division associated with Chinese automaker Chery, says it has already delivered more than 3,000 robots globally, including around 2,000 outside China. The company is targeting 10,000 deliveries next year and has even deployed robots for applications such as traffic management and public-safety work in China. It's becoming a race to determine who can manufacture robots cheaply, train them quickly and deploy them at scale. AI Is Giving Robots Their “Brain” The explosion in humanoid robotics is happening at the same time as enormous advances in artificial intelligence. Modern AI systems can recognize objects, interpret language, analyze their environment and make increasingly complex decisions. Robotics gives that intelligence a physical body. Instead of an AI system answering a question on your laptop, imagine one that can see a package, understand where it needs to go, pick it up and physically move it. This combination of AI + robotics, often described as embodied intelligence, is one reason technology companies and governments are paying so much attention to humanoid machines. The World Robot Conference itself is showcasing technologies including humanoids, machine learning, robotic vision, intelligent manufacturing and brain-computer interfaces. But Don't Expect a Robot Butler Tomorrow Despite the excitement, today's humanoid robots still have serious limitations. Some machines can perform carefully designed tasks extremely well but struggle when something unexpected happens. Reliability, battery life, safety, cost, dexterity and the ability to operate in unpredictable environments remain major engineering challenges. The Next Tech Race Has Already Started The smartphone era put powerful computers in our pockets. The generative-AI era gave computers the ability to create, reason and communicate in increasingly sophisticated ways. Humanoid robotics could represent the next stage: giving AI the ability to interact directly with the physical world. Factories and warehouses will probably feel the impact first because their environments are relatively controlled and repetitive tasks can provide clear economic value. Homes are harder. A household contains stairs, pets, children, fragile objects and thousands of unpredictable situations that robots must understand before they can become dependable everyday assistants. But the direction of travel is becoming clearer. Hundreds of companies are building robots. Governments see robotics as strategically important. Investors are pouring money into the sector. Manufacturers are trying to move machines from demonstrations into actual workplaces. The question is therefore changing. It is no longer simply: “Will humanoid robots become real?” Increasingly, it is: “How quickly will they become useful enough to work beside us?” And based on what we're seeing in 2026, the humanoid robot boom may have officially begun.
