BEIJING — Xiaomi has unveiled a new generation of its internally designed smartphone processor, strengthening its push to reduce dependence on outside chip suppliers and giving China another high-profile entrant in the global semiconductor race.
The new processor, called the Xring O3, was developed by Xiaomi and is being manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) using an advanced 3-nanometre process, according to people familiar with the project. The chip is expected to appear in an upcoming Xiaomi flagship foldable smartphone.
Xiaomi Expands Its In-House Chip Strategy
The Xring O3 represents the latest step in Xiaomi’s effort to design more of the critical technology inside its own products.
For years, major smartphone makers have depended heavily on companies such as Qualcomm and MediaTek for processors. Xiaomi’s growing investment in its own chips could give it greater control over performance, power efficiency, artificial intelligence features and the overall user experience.
This approach is similar to strategies used by companies such as Apple and Samsung, which have invested heavily in developing their own processors to differentiate their devices and reduce reliance on third-party suppliers.
From Xring O1 to Xring O3
Xiaomi’s semiconductor ambitions became more visible in 2025 when the company introduced the Xring O1, its first self-developed flagship smartphone processor.
The Xring O1 was built using a second-generation 3nm manufacturing process and featured a 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU architecture. It powered devices including the Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra.
The new Xring O3 suggests Xiaomi is continuing to expand its custom-chip roadmap instead of treating the earlier processor as a one-off experiment.
More Chips for AI and Autonomous Driving
Xiaomi’s ambitions go beyond smartphones.
The company is also reportedly working with TSMC on two additional processors: the Xring O100, designed as a neural processing unit for Xiaomi’s MiMo artificial-intelligence models, and the Xring D100, which is being developed for autonomous-driving applications.
That strategy fits Xiaomi’s wider transformation from a smartphone manufacturer into a company spanning consumer electronics, AI, smart-home products and electric vehicles.
The company has already invested more than 20 billion yuan, or roughly $3 billion, in chip development, while expanding its semiconductor workforce to more than 3,000 employees, Reuters reported.
China Pushes for Greater Semiconductor Self-Reliance
Xiaomi’s latest chip development also comes as China continues to invest heavily in building a more self-reliant semiconductor industry.
Beijing has made advanced chips a strategic priority as restrictions from the United States and its allies have limited Chinese access to some high-end semiconductor technologies and manufacturing equipment.
China has committed tens of billions of dollars through state-backed semiconductor investment funds and has also pushed domestic chipmakers to increase their use of locally produced equipment.
However, Xiaomi’s reliance on TSMC to manufacture the Xring O3 shows that full semiconductor independence remains difficult.
Designing an advanced chip and manufacturing one at the cutting edge are two different challenges, and TSMC remains one of the world’s most important producers of advanced processors.
Why the Xring O3 Matters
For Xiaomi, designing its own processor could provide several strategic advantages.
It may allow the company to optimize software and hardware more closely, improve AI processing, reduce dependence on outside chip vendors and build unique features for its smartphones and other connected devices.
It could also help Xiaomi compete more directly with technology companies that already control important parts of their own hardware ecosystems.
The company has continued to perform strongly in smartphones despite a difficult global market, selling around 65 million handsets during the first half of 2026, according to Reuters.
At the same time, Xiaomi’s electric-vehicle business is becoming an increasingly important part of the company, creating potential opportunities for its custom chips to be used across phones, cars, smart devices and AI systems.
A Bigger Battle Over Chips
The launch of the Xring O3 highlights a broader shift taking place in the technology industry.
Advanced semiconductors are no longer simply components inside smartphones and computers. They are becoming strategic assets that influence artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, robotics, national security and economic competitiveness.
For China, building stronger domestic semiconductor capabilities is therefore about much more than producing smartphones.
And for Xiaomi, the Xring O3 is another sign that the company wants to control more of the technology powering its products.
The key question now is whether Xiaomi can turn its growing chip-design capabilities into a sustainable semiconductor platform that can compete with established global players.
If it succeeds, the Xring family could become an important part of both Xiaomi’s future and China’s broader push for greater technological self-reliance.
