There are two ways to wipe an Apple Watch, and people selling one routinely pick the wrong one. Knowing how to unpair Apple Watch properly is what separates a clean handover from a watch the buyer cannot use at all.

The difference comes down to Activation Lock. Unpairing from your iPhone removes it. Erasing the watch from its own Settings app does not — even though both leave you looking at a factory-fresh setup screen.

The mistake that makes a sold watch useless

Activation Lock is tied to your Apple Account. While it is on, nobody else can set the watch up, no matter how thoroughly it has been erased.

Apple is explicit about the two outcomes. Of unpairing, it says: “Unpairing your Apple Watch restores it to factory settings and removes Activation Lock.” Of erasing the watch from the watch itself, it says the process “erases your Apple Watch and restores it to factory settings, but doesn’t remove Activation Lock.”

Both leave an identical-looking blank watch. Only one of them is actually ready to hand over. That is the entire trap, and it is why the on-watch erase is the wrong tool for a sale.

How to Unpair Apple Watch from your iPhone

This is Apple’s recommended method and the one to use whenever you still have the paired iPhone. It backs the watch up and clears Activation Lock in a single operation.

  1. Keep the watch and iPhone close together so they stay in Bluetooth range throughout.
  2. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  3. Go to the My Watch tab and select your watch at the top.
  4. Tap the i (info) button next to it.
  5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
  6. On a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the plan. Apple’s guidance is to keep it if you will pair the watch to your iPhone again, and remove it if you are selling or giving the watch away — in which case contact your carrier to cancel the subscription.
  7. Enter your Apple Account password when prompted. This step is what turns Activation Lock off, which is why the process cannot complete without it.
  8. Wait for the watch to finish erasing and restart to the setup screen.

The backup is stored on your iPhone, not on the watch. If you are also replacing the iPhone, back the iPhone up before you wipe it or the watch backup goes with it.

How to erase an Apple Watch without the iPhone

If the paired iPhone is gone, sold or wiped, you can still erase the watch from the watch itself. Go in knowing this creates no backup and leaves Activation Lock in place.

  1. On the watch, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General, then Reset.
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  4. Enter your passcode if you are asked for it.
  5. Choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan, then tap Erase All to confirm.

Older guides tell you to hold the side button and then firmly press the Power Off slider to reach a reset screen. That Force Touch gesture was removed from watchOS and no longer works — the route is through Settings.

After this, the watch is blank but still locked to your Apple Account. The next section is not optional if you are passing it on.

Removing Activation Lock from iCloud.com

This is the step that finishes the job when you erased the watch without the iPhone. It is also how you fix a watch you have already handed over.

  1. Go to iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple Account.
  2. From the Quick Access menu at the top right, select Find My.
  3. Open All Devices and select your Apple Watch.
  4. Erase the watch if it has not been erased already.
  5. Choose Remove from Account.

Note the naming: this used to be labelled Find iPhone, and a lot of guides still say so. In the current iCloud interface you are looking for Find My.

Remove from Account is the part people skip. Erasing alone does not release the watch — if it is still listed under All Devices, it is still locked.

If you have already sold the watch

You do not need the watch back. Sign in at iCloud.com, open Find My, select the watch and use Remove from Account as above. The buyer will then be able to set it up.

The reverse case is worth knowing before you buy secondhand: if a watch asks for someone else’s Apple Account during setup, only that person can release it. No reset, no repair shop and no amount of erasing gets around it.

Unpair, reset, and erase are not the same word

These get used interchangeably online, which is where much of the confusion starts.

  • Unpair — done from the iPhone. Backs up, erases, and removes Activation Lock.
  • Erase all content and settings — done on the watch. Wipes it, keeps Activation Lock.
  • Force restart — holding the Digital Crown and side button. Deletes nothing at all.

Our separate guide to how to reset Apple Watch goes through the erase routes in more detail, and how to pair Apple Watch to a new phone covers the other side of the move.

Before you unpair: a short checklist

  • Back up the iPhone, since that is where the watch backup lands.
  • Have your Apple Account password to hand — unpairing will not complete without it.
  • Charge both devices enough that the process is not interrupted.
  • Decide about the cellular plan before you start, and contact your carrier if you are cancelling.
  • Unpair before shipping a trade-in, not after.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does unpairing Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?

Yes. Apple states that unpairing restores the watch to factory settings and removes Activation Lock. That is why unpairing from the iPhone is the correct method before selling or trading in.

Will I lose my data if I unpair my Apple Watch?

Unpairing creates a backup on your iPhone first, so you can restore your settings when you pair a watch again. Erasing the watch from its own Settings does not create a backup.

Can I unpair my Apple Watch without the iPhone?

You can erase it from the watch itself via Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This is not a true unpair: there is no backup, and Activation Lock stays on until you remove the watch from your account at iCloud.com.

How do I know if Activation Lock is still on?

Sign in at iCloud.com, open Find My and look at All Devices. If your Apple Watch is still listed there, it is still tied to your account.

What happens if I forget to unpair before selling?

The buyer will be blocked at setup. You can fix it remotely by signing in at iCloud.com, opening Find My, selecting the watch and choosing Remove from Account.

Do I need to remove the cellular plan when unpairing?

Keep it if you intend to pair the watch to your iPhone again. Remove it if you are selling or giving the watch away, and contact your carrier about cancelling the subscription.

Do I have to unpair before pairing with a new iPhone?

If you are transferring both devices together and restoring from an iPhone backup, the watch usually comes across without a manual unpair. Unpairing is the right move when the watch is leaving you or the transfer does not go smoothly.

Can a repair shop remove Activation Lock?

No. It is tied to the original Apple Account and can only be released by the account holder, either by unpairing or by removing the watch from the account at iCloud.com.
